Top 11 Movies of 2008

The reason I have 11 movies instead of 10 is because I watched The Edge of Heaven after I wrote my Honorable Mentions post, but I didn’t want to bump a movie off my top ten list to make room for it so I decided to do a top 11.  So anyways, these are my favorite movies of 2008 and I advise everyone one of you to watch at least a couple of these movies.  In Descending Order.

Which Oscars Did I Get Right?

So I ended up with 20/24 correct.  I missed Best Foreign Film, Best Sound Editing, Best Documentary Short and most embarrassingly Best Actor.  I still can’t believe Sean Penn beat Mickey Rourke.  Have a good night.

Honorable Mentions of 2008

These are the movies I really liked, but didn’t quite make my top ten.  I still throughly recommend them all.  I still cannot believe The Visitor did not make my Top 10 list.  In no particular order.

Frost/Nixon is good movie with great performances.

A comedy by the Coen Brothers.  What is not to love.

The acting in Doubt is better than the movie itself.  Still, a very good, thought provoking time.

doubt

A very good movie.  More deserving of its’ best pic nom than Frost/Nixon of Ben Button.

A super fun movie.  Overshadowed by the Dark Knight, but arguably the 2nd best Super hero movie ever.

Son of Rambow is a charming comedy.  Seek it out.

Charlie Kaufman’s directorial debut is considered a masterpiece by some. I’m still unsure of it, ultimately well worth watching.

synecdoche_new_york

The 11th best movie of 2008.  This is a must watch in my opinion.

I just watched this so I may be rating it a little highly, but I just loved loved loved it.

Dead Or Alive

b00008wjck01lzzzzzzz

I just imported my Blogger blog into WordPress and I noticed my second post from August 26, 2007 was about the movie Zebraman.  In that post I mentioned that I would like to watch more Takashi Miike films.  It just so happened that today I watched Dead or Alive, my first Takashi Miike movie since Zebraman.  Since I like Zebraman I thought Dead or Alive would be good, but Dead or Alive is an average movie, period.  That being said it has two craziest, awesomest scenes ever shot on film.  These are the opening and closing scenes.  Everything between is mediocre though the plot is so convoluted I won’t even try to explain it.  I cannot really recommend the movie because of this, but I’m sure Miike fans will want to watch this regardless.  I will leave you with a picture of the protagonist with a Bazooka.
